Meet the Board of HSC!
ZACH APONY (President) joined the Board of Directors in 2016. They were elected President February 2018 after serving in roles such as Chair of the Personnel Committee and Season Dramaturg. They received a BA in Dramaturgy of Classical Tragedy from Hampshire College in 2014. Their commitment to supporting artists of all disciplines to come together and do what they love brought Zach to Hampshire Shakespeare. They have a strong passion for making radical and progressive art, especially in times of political and social strife. DAVID MIX BARRINGTON (Personnel Committee Chair) has been a member of HSC since 2002, a board member since 2012, and served as President of the company from 2015 to 2018. He has appeared in seventeen Shakespeare Under the Stars productions, most notably as Polonius in both Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead in 2017, Autolicus in The Winter’s Tale in 2011, and Owen Glendower in Henry IV: Part I in 2009. He also performs regularly with Valley Light Opera. By day he teaches computer science at UMass. He lives in North Amherst with his wife Jessica and two dogs, one named Duncan after the king of Scotland.
JESSY BONZEK (Outreach & Advancement Committee Chair) joined the Board of Hampshire Shakespeare Company in Summer 2017 and took on the role of Chair of the Outreach and Advancement Committee, overseeing publicity, community outreach and fundraising. She has a degree in Fine and Performing Arts from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and has worked with a number of theater companies around New England. Jessy currently works in digital marketing at Amherst College, and lives in South Hadley with her dog, Walker.
KEVIN FORESTY is currently on the Board for the first year. Kevin started after involvement with Hampshire Shakespeare Company’s production of Hamlet. With the company Kevin has also performed in Twelfth Night and also was the assistant to the director of Othello. This wouldn’t be my Kevin’s time on a board but this has been greatest experience thus far. As an actor and dancer, Kevin hopes to contribute artistic skills to the board and in doing so, as a member of the board, obtain the goal to enact positive change and move the company into a greater tomorrow! As Kevin continues to be apart of this amazing company, Kevin will keep making big efforts moving forward in hopes to making big things happen!
PHILIP HART HELZER (Treasurer) joined Hampshire Shakespeare as King Alonso in the Tempest in 2010, having progressed/digressed from musician, singer actor to actor. Ey joined the board in 2016 and soon after ey became Treasurer. Ey has been the principal cellist of the Pioneer Valley Symphony for twenty years and a member of the Valley Light Opera for ten. Ey has played cello for fifty years and been professional for thirty-seven. Ey is very proud of eir family, beautiful children Jordan and Abby, and lovely wife, Kate. This is eir first bio in Elverson.
MANDA JACOBI (Secretary) has been performing with Hampshire Shakespeare since 2014, and joined the board shortly after in 2015. In addition to acting, she has also directed a few scene selections that were performed during the off-season. Currently, she serves the board as secretary and chair of the Artistic Committee. Manda has a dual degree in Theatre and Music from Muhlenberg College and has been involved with theatre and performing since 2002. She would love to talk to you about the ways in which you can get involved with HSC, or even just gave about how Juliet totally should have just run away and become a pirate. ACHAETEY KABAL first joined Hampshire Shakespeare in 2016, and has been on the board since 2017, where they currently serve as a member of the Personnel Committee. They got involved by ushering for A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2016, and have since stage managed two Young Company productions, as well as the 2017 repertory season of Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
ARTHUR R KINNEY (Vice President), Thomas W Copeland Professor of Literature and a member of the Board of directors for several years as published 8 books on Shakespeare including the Oxford Handbook on Shakespeare; Critical Essays on Hamlet; Shakespeare Webs; “Lies like Truth”: Shakespeare, Macbeth and the Cultural Moment, Shakespeare and Cognition; Shakespeare, Computers and the Mystery of Authorship; The Birds and Beast of Shakespeare.
KARIN PERLMAN (Vice President)’s involvement with Hampshire Shakespeare began in 2004 when her then 5 year old shakespeare-loving son was fold enough to participate in HSC’s summer “Little Folk Tales” workshops. Her son spent part of every summer after that participating HSC’s youth theater workshops and then several years in the Young Company and Karin appreciated the amazing culture of the company and the people involved with it. In 2008 she was asked to join the board and she has maintained a special interest in the youth programs and Young Company. Karin is a clinical social worker, volunteers at other local theater companies, and studies improv.
